WHO Says No Need For Major Concern Regarding New COVID-19 Variant
WHO Says New COVID-19 Variant Is Normal – The World Health Organization said there is no need to for major concern regarding a new, highly infectious strand of COVID-19 from Britain.
Recently, several countries drew concern as a new coronavirus strain was found in Britain. However, According to WHO emergencies chief, Mike Ryan, this was a “normal” part of the virus’ cycle.
We have to find a balance. It’s very important to have transparency, it’s very important to tell the public the way it is, but it’s also important to get across that this is a normal part of virus evolution
Furthermore, the WHO even had a positive outlook on the new discovery. Who says that the new strain and its quick discovery was an indicative sign of the new tools to track the virus work.
“Being able to track a virus this closely, this carefully, this scientifically in real-time is a real positive development for global public health, and the countries doing this type of surveillance should be commended“, Ryan added.
Moreover, WHO, citing data from British health officials said there was still no evidence that suggests the new variant made people sicker. Additionally, it didn’t show any signs of it being deadlier than existing strands of the virus. The only difference was it spread faster.
Meanwhile, according to an article from ABS-CBN, WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan said that there had already been a number of COVID-19 mutations.
However, she emphasized that none have yet to have a significant impact on “either the susceptibility of the virus to any of the currently used therapeutics, drugs or the vaccines under development and one hopes that will continue to be the case“.
