It is a constellation in the northern sky. It came from the Greek word which means ox driver, plowman, or herdsman.

Boötes is depicted as a herdsman with two hunting dogs on a leash and a club in the other. In Greek mythology, it is associated with Arcas, son of Zeus and Callisto, daughter of the Arcadian king Lycaon.

The constellation is home to the double star Izar and Arcturus. It is the 13th largest constellation in the night sky, occupying an area of 907 square degrees. It can be found in NQ3, the third quadrant in the northern hemisphere.

It houses the Boötes void, Boötes Dwarf Galaxy and NGC 5466, among others.

Boötes belongs to the Ursa Major family, along with Camelopardalis, Canes Venatici, Coma Berenices, Corona Borealis, Draco, Leo Minor, Lynx, Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor.

Three meteor showers are associated with the constellation. they are the January Bootids, the June Bootids, and the Quadrantids.
