The new species was discovered by Gustavo Hinojosa, Jay Barlow and Elizabeth Henderson, according to USA Today.

The three researchers were working in conjunction with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. This rare types of whale species was first associated with an unidentified acoustic signal, which was spotted by the remote San Benito Islands.

The said sound may have been linked to the Perrin’s beaked whale, which is a whale species that resides in deep, remote waters. It has never seen before.

There are, however, photographs, videos and more acoustic signals that were later gathered by the team and Sea Shepherd workers, which would confirm the discovery of the new type of beaked whale..

The trio reported that they did not confirm the possibility of the new whale yet until further inspecting photographic evidence that was taken of the whales.

Based on the report, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society said that the signals were not any sound “known to science”, adding that only environmental genetic sampling can confirm the existence of a new whale.

If confirmed, this will be the 24th species of beaked whale ever discovered.

“We saw something new,”

“Something that was not expected in this area, something that doesn’t match, either visually or acoustically, anything that is known to exist. It just sends chills up and down my spine when I think that we might have accomplished what most people would say was truly impossible.”
