Also known as red-backed sea-eagle, it is a burd of prey species from the Accipitridae family of birds.

It falls under the Least Concern category in the IUCN Red List. The bird can be found in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Australia, specifically found mainly on the coast and in inland wetlands.

The bird feeds on dead fish and other prey. The raptor have a reddish-brown body plumage contrasting with their white head and breast, making them distinguishable from other birds of prey.

The bird is distinctive and contrastingly coloured, with chestnut plumage, with the exception of its head and breast, which is colored white and wing tips, which are black.

It is nearly the same size as the black kite (scientific name: Milvus migrans) and has a typical flight to that of a kite.

The binomial name of Brahminy kite is Haliastur indus.

Haliastur is a genus of birds of prey in the Accipitridae family of birds. Its name is the combination of the Ancient Greek term hali-, which means “sea-” and the Latin term astur, which means “hawk“, forming the term which means “sea-hawk“.

The specific epithet indus, on the other hand, is named after the Indus River, which rises in Tibet and flows through northern India and then southwest through Kashmir and Pakistan to the Arabian Sea.
