What Is Anatomy? About The Branch Of Biological Science

ANATOMY– In this topic, we are going to know and learn about the scientific biological branch known as anatomy.

ANATOMY

Encyclopedia Britannica described the term as a field in the biological sciences that deals with the identification and description of body structures of living things.

It is also described as a branch of natural science which deals with the structural organization of living things. The study is tied to fields like developmental biology, embryology, comparative anatomy, evolutionary biology, and phylogeny.

The term is derived from the Greek term anatomē (ἀνατομή), which means ‘dissection’, whihc is derived from the terms aná (ἀνά) or ‘up‘, and témnō (τέμνω ) or ‘I cut’, forming the term anatémnō (ἀνατέμνω ) or ‘I cut up, cut open‘.

In this sense, you could say that dissection is basic to all anatomical research.

Branches

It is divided into two subbranches, namely:

  • Macroscopic
    • Also known as gross anatomy, it is the examination of an animal’s body parts using unaided eyesight.
  • Microscopic
    • Microscopic, on the other hand, is a sub-branch which involves the use of optical instruments in the study of the tissues of various structures, known as histology, and also in the study of cells.
