Its flowers are generally small, white, and inconspicuous, which is highlighted by several brightly colored modified leaves known as bracts, which vary in color, ranging from white, red, mauve, purple-red, or orange.

The plan is known to have properties that are anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-tumor, anti-hypercholestrolemic, anti-hyperlipidemic, and anti-fertility. It is also widely grown as an ornamental plant.

Scientific Name

The binomial name of great bougainvillea is Bougainvillea spectabilis.

Bougainvillea is a genus of the the four o’clock family Nyctaginaceae. It is named after the French admiral explorer Louis-Antoine, Comte de Bougainville.

The specific epithet spectabilis, on the other hand, is Latin for ‘visible’. It is a combination of the term specto, which means ‘watch, observe’ look at’, and the suffix -abilis.
