Education Secretary Briones Suggests Investigation Of OVP

LEONOR BRIONES – Education Secretary Leonor Briones said the Department of Education has no authority to conduct an investigation of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) over the “learning hub” issue.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, millions of students across the Philippines shifted to remote learning. However, not all students were privileged enough to have the necessary tools to access the new learning platforms.

Because of this, the OVP established “learning hubs” that could provide students with these needs. But, this caused some issues between the OVP and DepEd.

Briones Suggests Investigation Of OVP Over Learning Hub

Briones recently clarified that DepEd had no partnership with the OVP regarding the learning hubs. Yesterday, media reporters asked Briones of DepEd would investigate and put a halt to the project.

According to an article from Inquirer, the Education Secretary said:

We have no authority to impose any punishment or anything on the OVP because that is not in the mandate of the Department of Education. Maybe another government [agency] should look into that

Furthermore, Briones clarified that there may have been a miscommunication in the exchange of letters between DepEd and the OVP. Additionally, DepEd said the OVP informed them of their community learning hub project. However, DepEd asserted that they gave no authority to the OVP to proceed.
