BROMINE – In this topic, we are going to know and learn the element Bromine and some of its following uses.
It is a chemical element with the symbol Br , and the atomic number 35, hence, it is 35Br . It is the third lightest halogen.
The element is a fuming red-brown liquid at room temperature that readily evaporates to form a similarly coloured gas.
Its properties are intermediate between those of chlorine and iodine. Its name is derived from the Ancient Greek term brômos, which means “stench”, in reference to its sharp and disagreeable smel.
Elemental is very reactive and does not occur free in nature and can be found in colourless soluble crystalline mineral halide salts, which is analogous to table salt.
The bromide ion’s high solubility has caused its accumulation in the oceans.
Uses
Here are some of its uses, according to Rsc:
- Agriculture
- It is used in many areas such as agricultural chemicals, dyestuffs, insecticides, pharmaceuticals and chemical intermediates. There are some uses that are being phased out for environmental reasons
- Flame Retardants
- The element can be found in retardants, which are added to furniture foam, plastic casings for electronics and textiles to make them less flammable. This, however, has been phased out because of toxicity concerns.
- Organobromides and Silver bromide
- Organobromides are used in halon fire extinguishers, while silver bromide is a chemical used in film photography.
