It is a chemical element with the symbol Mn, and the atomic number 3, hence, it is 25Mn.

The element is usually found in minerals in combination with iron. It is a transition metal with a multifaceted array of industrial alloy uses, particularly in stainless steels.

It is named for pyrolusite and other black minerals from Magnesia, a region of Greece.

It is a silvery-gray metal that resembles iron. The element is hard and very brittle, difficult to fuse, but easy to oxidize. The metal, as well as its common ions are paramagnetic, tarnishes slowly in air and rusts like iron in water containing dissolved oxygen.

Uses

Here are some of its uses, according to Byjus:

  • Used to produce several important alloys and deoxidize steel and desulfurize.
  • Dry cell batteries
  • Black or brown pigment in Paint.
  • An essential trace element for living creatures
  • This element is included in steel to increase strength and improve the workability.
  • The element’s steel is used for railway tracks, rifle barrels, safes and prison bars.
  • An alloy containing this element is used in drink cans, which improves the resistance to corrosion.
