UP Faculty Call To End Semester Immediately Following Recent Calamities
END SEMESTER IMMEDIATELY – Faculty members from different University of the Philippines (UP) schools join the call to “end semester now”.
Recently, the Philippines was hit with several consecutive calamities. As 2020 gave to fruition, Taal Volcano erupted, there were several massive earthquakes, and of course, the coronavirus pandemic.
Following this, the Philippines was hit by consecutive strong typhoons. Recently, areas such as Cagayan, Isabela, and Marikina were severely affected by the flooding caused by Typhoon Ulysses.

Because of this, thousands of students have lost the capability to continue their education. This led to UP making a petition to end the semester immediately.
“A total of 228 members of UP faculty signed and supports the statement: We, concerned faculty from the University of the Philippines, demand that the UP administration end the semester now!”
Among the issues tackled by the group was the lack of infrastructure to support remote learning. Along with this, UP was also concerned about the victims of the recent calamities.
“The struggles of the learners are further intensified by the recent calamities, leaving students and faculty from Bicol, Cagayan, Isabela, Marikina, and Rizal, among others, with an indefinite and debilitating loss of electricity and internet connection, destruction of properties and homes, and loss of loved ones.”
In light of this, UP wanted to implement a new system to replace the current numeric grade system. Meanwhile, you could read up about the petition here: View the rest of the signatories at bit.ly/EndTheSemFaculty
