Marikina River Water Level Surpasses Ondoy Says Local Authorities
MARIKINA RIVER – The water level of the Marikina River exceeds typhoon Ondoy with 21.9 meters as of writing due to Typhoon Ulysses.
Although not as strong as Typhoon Rolly, Ulysses still did serious damage to areas such as Marikina. As it rampaged through areas of Luzon, Ulysses’ heavy rains caused the Marikina River to overflow leading to severe flooding.
Back in 2009 when Ondoy hit, Marikina river’s peak water level was at 21.5 meters. Meanwhile, according to Marikina Mayor Marcelino Teodoro, the rainfall brought by Ulysses was at 150 to 170 millimeters in 6 hours.
According to an article from ABS-CBN, the Mayor said:
Parang naaalala natin, ang karanasan natin ay katulad ng Ondoy. Dinalaw din tayo ng Ondoy, ganitong oras, disoras ng gabi at nabigla ang lahat
Due to the intense flooding, residents were forced to climb up rooftops and looked for higher ground. Unfortunately, those who weren’t able to evacuate on time were stuck on their roofs as flooding continued.
As per the report, at least 30 people were left stuck on their roofs in Kasiglahan Village, Montalban Rizal.
Nandito na po kami sa bubong. Sa ngayon tumataas na po ang baha. Marami po kami dito kasama ang asawa at dalawang bata, nasa 2nd floor kami, inabot na po kami…’Yung mga bahay hindi na po makita, a resident added.
Based on weather forecast from PAGASA, strong to intense rainfall with the occasional torrential rains until Wednesday noon.
