As mentioned above, it is an ecoregion which is characterized by grassland plains without trees, with the exclusion of those near rivers and lakes.

Its biomes include montane grasslands and shrublands, as well as temperate grasslands, savannas and shrublands.

They are usually characterized by a semi-arid or continental climate. Its extremes can be recorded in the summer of up to 45 degrees Celsius or 115 degrees Fahrenheit; and -55 degrees Celsius or -65 degrees Fahrenheit in winter.

The ecoregion is classified into two types by climate:

  • Temperate
    • The “true” type, which is found in continental areas of the world and can be further subdivoded.
  • Subtropical
    • a similar association of plants which can be found in the driest areas with a Mediterranean-like climate and has a usually short wet period.

It can also be classified by vegetation type:

  • Shrub-steppe
    • A low-rainfall natural grassland. These have sufficient moisture to support a cover of perennial grasses or shrubs, albeit arid.
  • Alpine-steppe
    • high altitude natural alpine grassland. These are unique ecosystems found throughout the world
