It is referred to as the total amount of water on a planet. As one of the four major spheres of Earth, this sphere includes water that is on the surface of the planet, underground, and in the air.

Here on Earth, liquid water exists on the surface in the form of oceans, lakes and rivers. It also exists below ground—as groundwater, in wells and aquifers. It is also most visible as clouds and fog, according to National Geographic.

The frozen part of this sphere is made of ice such as glacier, ice caps and icebergs. This part is also known as the cryosphere.

Water moves through the sphere in a cycle and collects in clouds, then falls to Earth in the form of rain or snow.

The water collects in rivers, lakes and oceans. It then evaporates into the atmosphere to start the cycle all over again. This is known as the water cycle.
