No Expiration For Unused Data – Lapid Files “Roll-Over Data Scheme”

Lito Lapid Pushes For No Expiration For Unused Data

NO EXPIRATION FOR UNUSED DATA – Senator Lito Lapid pushed for a bill that seeks to institutionalize a “roll-over data scheme” for all internet service providers (ISP).

One of the most recurring issues for mobile data users in the Philippines is unused data. Previously, there were many plans and promos that allowed users to retain unused data whenever the promo period ends.

However, since a couple of years ago, these promos have slowly died out. Now, there are only a view promos left that offer this data roll-over scheme. This causes issues as subscribers can’t necessarily make use of the data they paid for.

No Expiration For Unused Data – Lapid Files "Roll-Over Data Scheme"

As such, Lapid filed Senate Bill No. 1880 on Wednesday seeking to to institutionalize a “roll-over data scheme”. With this, unused data allocation from data packages or promos would not expire. Instead, it “will carry over to succeeding months until the end of the year”.

If at the end of the year, there are still remaining unused data allocations, the same will be converted into rebates, which in turn, may be used for future subscriptions. Subscribers will definitely get the full value of the money they have spent in paying for these packages and promo

Lapid emphasized that he has taken note of the unfortunate situation data subscribers in the Philippines are in. He highlighted that the poor would also be severely affected by the current data allocation scheme.

This situation is quite unfortunate in light of our current data-hungry, internet-based world, especially for the poor who are forced to allocate their meager financial resources for internet subscriptions.

Under his new bill, ISPs, are mandated to impose a roll-over data scheme for their subscribers. With this, unused data would be accumulated until the last month of the year. Furthermore, unused data allocation for a year may also be transformed into rebates that could be used to pay internet fees in the next year of subscription.
