Basically, it is the biggest explosion that we, humans have ever seen, according to NASA;

Each blast is the extremely bright, super-powerful explosion of a star. One type of this blast is caused by the “last hurrah” of a massive star that is dying, It is the result of a star, which is, least five times more massive than the sun, goes out with a fantastic bang.

These massive stars burn huge amounts of nuclear fuel at their cores, which produces tons of energy so that the center gets very hot. Heat generates pressure, which is vital to keep the star from collapsing.

When it runs out of fuel, it cools off, causing it to drop. This happens so quickly that it creates enormous shock waves, resulting in the outer part of the star to explode.

After the blast, it leaves off the densest objects in the universe known as black holes.

The second type of supernova can occur in systems where two stars orbit one another and among them is an Earth-sized white dwarf.

A white dwarf is the remains of the star that has run out of fuel. If it collides with another or pulls too much matter from its nearby star, it explodes.
