It is a chemical element with the symbol N, and the atomic number 7, hence, it is 7N.

The element was discovered by Scottish physician Daniel Rutherford in 1772.

It got its name from nitrogène in 1790 when it was suggested by Jean-Antoine-Claude Chaptal since it was present in nitric acid and nitrates. nitrogène is derived from the Greek terms nitron and genes, which translates to nitre formning.

On the other hand, Antoine Lavoisier suggested to name it azote, which is derived from Greek which means “no life”, since it is an asphyxiant gas.

It is also the lightest member of the pnictogens in the periodic table of elements.

Uses

Here are some of its uses, according to RSC.

  • A Vital Element To The Chemical Industry
    • This element is used to make fertilisers, nitric acid, nylon, dyes and explosives.
  • Provides An Unreactive Atmosphere
    • This element is known for this purpose since this is used to preserve foods or in the case of electronics industries, production of transistors and diodes via annealing (heat treatment) stainless steel and other steel mill products
  • Refrigerant
    • Its liquid state is used for medical research and reproductive technology, as well as to rapidly freeze foods, helping them to maintain moisture, colour, flavour and texture.
