Five Individuals Caught In Spider Derby In Borbon, Cebu

SPIDER DERBY IN BORBON – Five individuals, which includes a minor, were caught by policmen in Borbon town in Cebu in a “kaka” or spider derby.

According to Inquirer’s Cebu Daily News, the five were playing kaka or ‘spider derby’ in Cebuano and were violating quarantine protocols.

The arrested were identified as Archie Quimque, George Pelorina, Francis Murillo, and James Mendoza Ruiz, and a minor, 17 years of age. They were caught in the act for engaging in the said activity in Barangay Tagnucan, Borbon. All residents were in the area.

The police conducted the arrest after they received a report from a concerned citizen that there were adults that were gathering in a usual Barangay Tagnucan to play kaka.

Retrieved from the police were five matchboxes, each containing live spiders inside, a makeshift arena for spiders to fight, and P200, which is said to be betting money.

Based on the report, the arrested will be charged for violation of Presidential Decree 1602, which penalizes illegal gambling.

The municipality of Borbon is a fourth-class town which is located at about 77 kilometers north of Cebu City.
