National ID System In Philippines – Majority To Be Enrolled By 2020

Majority Of Pinoys Covered By National ID System In Philippines By 2022 Says DILG

NATIONAL ID SYSTEM IN PHILIPPINES – The government is aiming to have a majority of Filipinos enrolled in the National ID System by 2022.

According to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), all Filipinos are required to enroll in the new ID system. However, DILG spokesman and Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya emphasized that there would be a schedule for the enrollment.

Furthermore, he said that they would prioritize household heads of around 32 provinces. But, the Spokesman asserted that by 2022, the majority, if not all Filipinos should already have a national ID.

During an interview with dzBB, Malaya stated:

Ang gusto po natin sa sistemang ito ay hindi na yung napakaraming ID pa ang ginagamit ng ating mga kababayan for identification…

Marami pa rin tayong mga kababayan na wala pa ring ID ngayon. Sedula pa rin ang ginagamit. So pagnagkaroon pa tayo nito, mayroong isang valid proof of identity

Meanwhile, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said it would begin pre-registration of the applicants. This would be a collection of the applicant’s social demographics. Moreover, registration requires applicants to head to testing centers, which could potentially lead to a mass gathering.

Back in 2018, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys Act) or Republic Act No, 11055. This law aims to better facilitate and integrate an array of government IDs by establishing a single National ID system.
