It is the largest and deepest ocean of Earth. This extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south.
It has an area of 165,250,000 square kilometers or 63,800,00 square miles which covers at about 46% of Earth’s water surface and about 32% of its total surface area. This makes it larger than all of Earth’s land area combined.
Its name was coined by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan during the Spanish circumnavigation of the world in 1521, naming it Mar Pacífico. which means “peaceful sea”.
The ocean was first sighted by Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama in 1513 and discovered the great “southern sea” which he named Mar del Sur, which is at the eastern portion of the Pacific.
