Hospitals Strictly Prohibited From Charging Patients For Donated PPEs Says DOH

CHARGING FOR DONATED PPEs – Obviously, hospitals can charge patients for using personal protective equipment. However, it cannot charge patients for PPEs that were donated to them.

Due to the shortages, several private and government agencies have been donated PPEs to hospitals to help with the COVID-19 response. However, there were some reports of hospitals charging patients with PPEs coming from donations.

As such, the Department of Health reminded hospitals that charging patients for donated personal protective equipment is strictly prohibited. According to an article from Inquirer, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated: “It is strictly prohibited that they [hospitals] charge PPEs kapag ito ay donated sa kanila“.

Furthermore, she emphasized that they have an inventory list of donated PPEs they could monitor. Along with this, she also told hospitals that they could only charge patients up to 30% of the administrative cost of the PPE purchases.

As per the article, administrative costs included the patient’s accommodation, whether they are placed in a hospital or in intensive care wards, and the number of medical workers and their shifts.

Currently, the number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines had surpassed 304,000. Along with this, more than 5,300 have succumbed to the deadly respiratory disease. Meanwhile, the number of recoveries have increased to 252,510 due to the DOH’s new recovery scheme.
