Tattoo Removal Required For Taxi Drivers In Lanzhou, China

TATTOO REMOVAL REQUIRED – Taxi drivers in the Chinese city of Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province, were ordered to have their tattoos removed.

Clearly, the more conservative members of society view tattoos as a sign of irresponsibility, addiction, and are even linked to crime. However, some view tattoos as a form of expression, art, and a platform to show their experiences.

But, even if you have no criminal links, having a tattoo as a taxi driver could get you banned in Lanzhou. According to an article from ABS-CBN, the order came last August when officials launched a campaign to “better” the image of their cab drivers.

Furthermore, the no-tattoo rules were imposed to get passengers comfortable during cab rides. Along with this, the mandate aimed to get the younger generations dissuaded from getting tattoos themselves.

But, one driver wanted to fight the mandate through an online government forum. There, he delivered a rebuttal to the city’s tattoo removal policy. As per the article, the cabdriver said:

When applying for our driver permit, we submit documents showing that we have no criminal records,” wrote the driver, who was not identified in the post and could not be reached for comment. “Our tattoos don’t turn us into bad guys and criminals

Meanwhile, one netizen from China expressed that tattoos should not be considered as a form of ill intentions. “You can’t stop someone from making a living just because of a personal preference”, he added.

Still, despite the arguments, the committee in charge of the order didn’t budge. Instead, they told drivers to cover-up the tattoos if they can’t remove it right away.
