Earth May Temporarily Pass Hazardous 1.5℃ Warming Limit By 2024
EARTH – A report from the World Meteorological Organization warned that the Earth may exceed the 1.5℃ warming limit by 2024.
According to Interaksyon, the Paris climate agreement aims to limit global warming to 1.5℃ this century.
The report said that the first overshoot beyond 1.5℃ would be temporary, which is likely added by a major climate anomaly like an El Niño weather pattern.
This, however, brings new doubt on whether or not Earth’s climate can be permanently stabilized at 1.5℃ warming. This is among those that were published in a report called “United in Science”.
The report also found that while greenhouse gas emissions declined slightly in 2020 due to the pandemic, the emissions are still very high. This means that atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations have continued to rise.
Concentrations of the three main greenhouse gases, among the three include carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O), have increased over the past decade. Current concentrations in the atmosphere are 147%, 259% and 123%, respectively.
The said concentrations, that was measured at Hawaii’s Mauna Loa Observatory and at Australia’s Cape Grim station in Tasmania show that they to increase in 2019 and 2020. Concentrations of CO₂ have reached 414.38 and 410.04 parts per million in July 2020, based on the report.
Furthermore, growth in CO₂ emissions from fossil fuel use slowed to around 1% per year in past decade from 3% during the 2000s.
The report added that due to the COVID-19 economic slowdown, an unprecedented decline is expected in 2020.
