89 Barangay Chiefs Suspended As Warning For SAP Anomalies

SAP ANOMALIES – The Office of the Ombudsman suspended 89 Barangay Chiefs for anomalies in cash aid distribution from the social amelioration program.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) reported several irregularities regarding the implementation of cash aid benefits to poor families. As such, over 89 Punong Barangays were given a 6-month preventative suspension period.

According to an article from ABS-CBN, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said:

Ang katiwalian ay walang puwang sa ating pamahalaan lalong-lalo pa ngayong panahon ng pandemya.

Back on September 2, the Office of the Ombudsman had an order that stated the evidence against the officials were strong. Furthermore, the charges against them included “Serious Dishonesty, Grave Misconduct, Abuse of Authority and Conduct Prejudicial to the Best Interest of the Service”.

Along with this, the Office of the Ombudsman also said that the charges may warrant a removal from service. Meanwhile, Año said Region 1, NCR, and Region II top the list of suspended Punong Barangays.

As per the article, the DILG urged local government units to immediately impose the suspension order. Of the 447 suspects of anomalies regarding SAP, 211 were elected officials. Meanwhile, 104 were appointed barangay officials, and 132 are their civilian cohorts.

Currently, the cases against these barangay officials are being handled by several City and Provincial Prosecutors across the Philippines.
