According to GMA News, Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Alaric Delos Santos reported that the troops from the 44th Infantry Battalion and the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Police Office were performing security operations when they faced at about 10 suspected members of ASG in Sitio Limuno, Barangay President Roxas at 2 AM.

This result in the death of five of the suspected members of ASG and two soldiers wounded who, as of the moment, are now in stable condition.

Recovered from the encounter, which took 30 minutes, were four high-powered firearms, including M16 and M14 rifles. Delos Santos added that government troops are currently on a pursuit against the ASG.

Commander of the 44th Infantry Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Don Templonuevo said that the battle was the result of pursuit operations against armed elements of Abral Abdusalam and Sahibad Group led by Furuji Indama, who is an ASG leader in Basilan.

Commander of the 102nd Infantry Brigade Brigadier General Leonel Nicolas, on the other hand, said that the group was supposedly planning to conduct kidnapping activities in the region, citing reports received from a reliable source.

“The unit would also like to thank the locals who tipped-off the authorities of the presence of these terrorist groups which resulted to the timely response of our troops,”

Based on the report, a clash also ensued on Sunday which ended with the slaying of Indama’s close associate. Two soldiers were also injured in the incident.
