Gov’t To Stop White Sand Project In Manila If Dolimite Proven Harmful To Humans
WHITE SAND ISSUE – Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said the gov’t would stop the white sand project of the Department of Health can prove that dolomite is harmful to humans.
Since its implementation, the beautification project of Manila Bay has received heavy criticism. According to environmentalists, the government should focus on sustainable rehabilitation instead of beautification.
Meanwhile, the DOH stated that dolomite dust used as artificial white sand could cause respiratory damage and other ailments. However, this statement didn’t go quite well for some high-ranking government officials.
Based on an article from Inquirer, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said that the government would halt the “white sand” rehabilitation project if the DOH could prove that dolomite dust is harmful to a person’s health.
Currently, the DILG led by Año is collaborating with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the restoration projects of Manila Bay. As per the article, Año asserted that based on the presentation of DENR head Roy Cimatu, Dolomite isn’t harmful to humans.
I don’t think the dolomites are harmful based on the presentation of Secretary Cimatu. Of course, there will be more discussions on this but based on what we’ve learned na talagang hindi na siya harmful but I leave it to the experts and we’ll have more discussions on this
Additionally, he said that he would like to get the input of the DOH if they could prove that dolomite was in fact harmful. However, based on the information given to him by Cimatu, he said he is more inclined to support the findings of the DENR.
The DILG Secretary explained that dolomites would only be harmful during crushing from the source. Moreover, he asserted that the crushed dolomites are already finished products that would be safe for humans.
