Meanwhile, according to an article from ABS-CBN, Villar finally explained why she had such disdain for research. During a Senate hearing on the state of the Philippine dairy industry, Villar said “kaya ako may misgivings sa research, ang cooperative nag-complain sa akin”.

Villar recalled that the officials received a P500,000 cash grant from a Rotary club from the University of the Philippines-Los Baños. Supposedly, the money was for banana seedlings to be given to farmers.

According to Villar, an official from the research office of UPLB told them to buy seedlings from her own company. Sadly, Villar asserted that “Namatay ’yung mga banana seedlings . . . “

As per the article, When the officials came back to UP Los Baños, they asked why the seedlings died. However, they could no longer trace back the company that sold the seedlings.

Kaya ako masama loob ko . . . Ikaw ang research institute ng isang SUC tapos magtatayo ka ng negosyo?, Villar said. Since then, Villar has asserted that “research is useless” if the researchers couldn’t apply their work to actual farming.

Research is being done to help the production of farmers pero kung ’yung research mo gagawin mo lang para gumasta sa research at hindi para tulungan ang farmers, that’s useless“, the Senator stated.
