FOUR MAJOR SPHERES OF EARTH – In this topic, we are going to learn and identify the four major spheres of the Earth.
The planet Earh is known to be the only planet with an atmosphere with free oxygen, oceans of water and life. It is the third planet of the Solar System.
The atmosphere of our home consists of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.9% argon, and 0.03% carbon dioxide.
Spheres
There are four major subsystems of Earth called spheres, they are the following:
- Lithosphere (Land)
- This sphere contains all the cold, hard solid land of the planet’s surface called “crust, the semi-solid land underneath the crust, and the liquid land near the center of the planet. What’s more is that the crust is very uneven.
- Hydrosphere (Water)
- This contains all the solid, liquid, and gaseous water of the planet ranging from 10 to 20 kilometers of thickness. The sphere extends from the planet surface downward several kilometers into the lithosphere and upward about 12 kilometers into the atmosphere.
- Biosphere (Living Things)
- This sphere contains all the planet’s living things, amonh them includes microorganisms, plants, and animals.
- Atmosphere (Air)
- This sphere contains all the air in Earth’s system which extends from less than 1 m below the planet’s surface to more than 10,000 km above the planet’s surface.
