Five-Storey Building Collapse In India Over 100 Possibly Trapped
BUILDING COLLAPSE IN INDIA – Another tragedy befell 2020 after a five-storey building collapsed in India.
At least a hundred people were possibly trapped in the debris of the collapsed building. However, not all of the 200 building residents were home at the time it collapsed in the evening.
According to Bharatshet Maruti Gogawale, a local lawmaker, there were about 100 to 125 people that were inside at the time it crumbled. The building was said to have at least 47 flats.
However, authorities have yet to determine the cause of the collapse and the actual number of casualties. Three teams from the National Disaster Response Force were assigned to the site. Then, 30 people were already pulled out by rescue teams and locals around the area.
Based on an article from CNN, the southwestern state of Kerela, India where the collapse happened, was battered by rain and flooding this season. As such, investigators look at the the intense rains as the reason for the tragic incident.
Old structures and illegal construction paired with heavy rains often lead to collapse in India. Back in 2017, more than 1,200 people were killed in 1,116 building collapses across the country.
