This branch’s objects of interest include planets, moons, stars, nebulae, galaxies, and comets. The field is one of the oldest natural sciences since early civilizations made observations of the night sky. Those civilizations include Babylonians, Greeks, Indians, Egyptians, Chinese, Maya, among others.

The term is derived from two Greek words astron, which means “star”, and nomia, which means “law” or “culture”.

Branches

Here are some of its branches:

  • Astrobiology
    • this branch studies the advent and evolution of biological systems in the universe.
  • Astrophysics
    • deals with the physics of the universe, including the physical properties of celestial objects and their interactions and behavior.
  • Planetary Science
    • this branch deals with the study of planets, moons, and planetary systems
  • Astrometry
    • refers to the study of the position of objects in the sky and their changes of position.
  • Observational astronomy
