Masbate Town No Funds To Aid Quake Victims – Mayor
MASBATE – Cataingan town has no more funds to help the victims of the magnitude 6.6 earthquake.
Yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Masbate. It was upgraded to 6.6 magnitude after a few minutes.
In a previous article, the agency’s chief seismologist, Renato Solidum, said they recorded 270 aftershocks and it could cause damages to houses and buildings. “Iyong malalakas na aftershocks, puwedeng ituloy ‘yong dagdag na kasiraan ng bahay, gusalu at tuluyang bumagsak,” he said.
In a report, several photos of the aftermath of the magnitude 6.6 earthquake in Masbate province went viral. The strong earthquake caused power interruption in at least 4 towns. It toppled powerlines in Placer, Esperanza, Pio V. Corpus, and Cataingan.

Based on a report from GMA News, the mayor of Cataingan, Felipe Cabataña, said their town has no funds to help the victims of the recent earthquake. He appealed to the national government for funds to help the residents affected by the earthquake.
“Kung maaari sana ‘yung pananawagan ko sa national government na sana tulungan kami kasi ang pondo naming sa calamity halos naubos na sa COVID…”
“Hindi naman kami mag-aasa na may lindol na darating kaya hindi namin nalagyan ng allocation ‘yung ganitong klaseng kalamidad kaya medyo nahihirapan ang tao,” he added.
According to the report, Mayor Cabataña said several residents preferred to stay outside their homes as aftershocks are still being experienced in the area. He asked for tent donation to provide temporary shelters for the quake victims.
He expressed concern that the residents might ignore physical distancing in their evacuation centers. “Yun na nga yung problema. Sa evacuation center, hindi na masyadong ma-observe ‘yung social distancing kasi maliit ‘yung lugar. Ang evacuation center maraming tao,” he said.
Based on the report, the earthquake also caused damage to its ports. Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) ordered the suspension of the operation. Mayor Cabataña said the suspension will affect 90% of its economy.
