MANAHIMIK KA MARITES – It took a pandemic for us to realize that the infamous Karens of the west had infiltrated the Filipino culture.
Recently, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno announced that there would be no liquor ban in Manila during the MECQ. Naturally, the news was celebrated by thousands of residents.
However, everything changed when Marites attacked. In the comment section of the Mayor’s post, she said:
“Dapat may liquor ban Mayor. Hindi naman po yan Essential Needs”.
These words echoed throughout social media causing a rampage of negative reactions from netizens. But, the most iconic would be “Manahimik Ka Marites”.
Obviously, netizens never intended any ill-will towards the person. However, the word Marites had become synonymous with “Karens” that it just caught on so fast.
Here are some of the comments of Netizens on Isla Darwin’s Facebook post:
If there’s one thing constant in the Philippines and around the world, it’s the public’s love for their drinks. However, Marites’ statements do hold true to some degree. But, the Mayor may have already thought about the compromise between health and the economy.
