NASA To Send Football Field-Sized Balloon To Outer Space To Study Stars
NASA BALLOON – Balloons have long been used to study the atmosphere but a Football field-sized balloon is one for the books.
This time, it’s not merely the atmosphere that’s going to be studied. Instead, scientists plan to use the balloon to study star formation. However, the project was still set to deploy in December of 2023.
According to a report from CNN, the mission’s name was “ASTHROS”. Furthermore, the balloon would remain for three weeks in the stratosphere, where the ozone layers is found in the atmosphere.

In addition to the massive balloon that’s about the size of a football field, several specialized equipment would also be installed. These include a specialized far-infrared telescope designed to detect light the human eye can’t see.
ASTHROS is an acronym for Astrophysics Stratospheric Telescope for High Spectral Resolution Observations at Submillimeter-wavelengths. Moreover, the balloon would be 400 feet wide with a gondola dangling below it to cradle the specialized far-infrared telescope and cooling system.
What’s more impressive is that the cooling system in ASTHROS was said to keep the instruments at “absolute zero”. This would be the coldest temperature that matter could ever achieve.
As per the article, orge Pineda, principal investigator of ASTHROS stated:
I think it’s understood that stellar feedback is the main regulator of star formation throughout the universe’s history..
Computer simulations of galaxy evolution still can’t quite replicate the reality that we see out in the cosmos. The nitrogen mapping that we’ll do with ASTHROS has never been done before. It will be exciting to see how that information helps make those models more accurate
ASTHROS would then study two targets in the Milky Way Galaxy, both of which were said to be “star forming” regions. The instruments would then create 3D printed maps of the gas in the regions.
