Despite the numerous morals we could derive from the story, a universally accepted lesson we could take from it is this: We should always be weary about how we treat others.
Humans are quick to emotions, some might be more adept at controlling it than others. However, there are times when we just don’t know the history and story behind other people. That’s why sometimes its very easy to offend another.
Just a single word, act, or even a glance, has a possibility of damaging a relationship. This is more emphasized in the New Testament with “Do Unto Others As You Would Done Unto You”.
An example we could take from the story is the character Fortunato. Unfortunately, Fortunato is an individual who has a low disregard for others. He thinks he is a funny jester. But, there are traces of malice and cruelty in his words, revealing his true character.
Others might now reveal their true emotions, or how they are offended. Still, some remember such impudence for the rest of their lives. A good example of this is Montresor who could remember injuries for years and retaliate accordingly. However, this would be an extreme example of human nature.
Meanwhile, the fate that befell Fortunato in the story could be seen not only as karma or payback for the countless injuries he had done to Montresor, but to the countless others he had hurt. One could say that Fortunato got what he deserved as his sins finally caught up with him in horrible fashion.
