Also known as fulmar or Arctic fulmar, it is an abudant sea bird. It can be found primarily in subarctic regions of the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans.

These come in one of two color morphs namely, light (white head and body with gray wings and tail) and dark (uniformly gray).

These birds belong to the petrel and shearwater family Procellariidae despite having the appearance of gulls.

The species, as mentioned, is gray and white with a pale yellow, thick, bill and bluish legs. They have a limited walking ability but are strong fliers.

Answer

The binomial name of northern fulmar is Fulmarus glacialis.

Fulmarus are tubenosed seabirds of the petrel and shearwater family Procellariidae. In reference to their stomach oil and similarity to seagulls, the genus name came from two Old Norse terms full, which means “foul“, and mar, which means “gull“.

The species name glacialis is the Latin term for “glacial”, referring to its extreme northern range.

This species has three subspecies:

  • Fulmarus glacialis glacialis
  • Fulmarus glacialis auduboni
  • Fulmarus glacialis rodgersii
