Also known as the Arctic loon and black-throated diver., it is a migratory aquatic bird in the northern hemisphere, primarily in freshwater lakes in northern Europe and Asia.

This species is sister to a clade consisting of Pacific loon, the common loon, and the yellow-billed loon.

It measures at around 70 centimeters or 28 inches in length; an 1.3 to 3.4 kilograms or 2.9 to 7.5 pounds in weight.

The male has a nearly black upperparts, with white-squared mantle and scapular. The bird have grey head and hindneck; as well as white and striped sides.

It also has a black throat, hence the name “black-throated loon”.
