Here is the reason why some lawmakers who support ABS-CBN franchise renewal could not vote
ABS-CBN Franchise – Some Congressmen who rally behind the TV giant for its franchise renewal couldn’t vote because of this reason.
While the hearing is still ongoing, several members of the House of Representatives already expressed avid support for the network. However, some of them had no chance to vote in favor of the media company.
Based on the report from ABS-CBN, Agusan Del Norte Rep. Lawrence Fortun said, “I am not a member of the Committee on Legislative Franchises. So, while I am a co-author of a bill for the renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise, I could not vote.”
The Congressman hoped that this will answer the wondering minds of many why his name was not included in the list of 11 lawmakers who voted not for the franchise denial.
In the voting that happened on Friday, July 10, only regular and ex-officio members of the committee on legislative franchises were able to vote as it is the process.
Meanwhile, Rep. Loren Legarda, a former journalist in ABS-CBN stated in her Facebook post that she “constrained from participating in the deliberation and the voting.” She was one of the authors of bills seeking the new franchise of the TV giant.
Furthermore, Rep. Edcel Lagman cited the same reason. He is not a member of the committee on legislative franchises.
“I want to make it clear that I am not a member of the committee on legislative franchises, for which reason I was not entitled to vote on the issue whether or not to grant ABS-CBN a renewed franchise,” he said.
However, Lagman stressed that he has the right to voice out his stand on the ABS-CBN franchise renewal.
