It is a large cat which is native to Africa and central Iran. As the fastest land animal, it runs at around 80 to 128 kilometers per hour or 50 to 80 miles per hour.

It has a small rounded head which has a short snout and black tear-like facial streaks. The cheetah’s coat is usually tawny to white or pale buff that is covered with evenly spaced, solid black spots.

Its binomial name is Acinonyx jubatus. There are four main subspecies, namely:

  • Southeast African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus)
  • Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus)
  • Northeast African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus soemmeringii)
