The American Expression Boondocks Was Derived From The Filipinos
LOANED WORDS – The American expression “Boondocks” which meant a rural area, actually originated from Filipinos through the Tagalog word “Bundok”.
For centuries, Filipinos have borrowed words from different cultures and nations and made it their own. However, there are actually a couple of words that other countries borrowed from the Philippines.
Boondocks, in American Culture, represented a rural area that is typically hard to access much like the “bundoks” of the Philippines. The original expression was brought to the US through military personnel who fought in the Philippine-American War.
There was even an animated show of the same name which ran from 2005 to 2014.
Based on an article from Wikipedia, it originally held a description of “connotation of bewilderment and confusion”. This was due to the guerrilla warfare soldiers encountered while on the Philippine Mountains.
Meanwhile, the word boondocks have shifted its definition throughout the years and are now often referred to as a backward, unsophisticated area by most city folk. Likewise, this definition also holds through in the Philippines itself.
People often refer to Bundok or Provisya the same way. Moreover, most treat the individuals living their as unsophisticated, ignorant, and illiterate country-folk. However, this is far from the truth.
Another word that is known throughout the world is the “Yoyo”. A toy with a string attached to it actually originated from the Ilocano word “yoyo”.
