Here’s the statement from the camp of Wilfredo Keng on press freedom issue
On Monday, Rappler CEO Maria Ressa received a guilty verdict from the court due to the cyber libel case filed against her by businessman Wilfredo Keng.
Keng filed the case in 2017 because of the alleged libelous article that the site of the online news company published in 2012. This was republished in 2014. The businessman said that Rappler never got his side of the story regarding the alleged use of former Chief Justice Renato Corona of his vehicle.
As the court finally announced that Ressa, along with former reporter Reynaldo Santos, is guilty of the cyber libel charges, various reactions on social media flooded concerning the press freedom.
Some said that it is a form of curtailing press freedom since Ressa has been working in the world of news and current affairs and a known critic of the present administration.
In line with this issue of the “freedom of speech”, the camp of Wilfredo Keng reacted, based on the report from TV 5. Atty Melissa Andaya, the lawyer of the businessman said that Rappler was unmindful that the article they wrote against Keng has its damaging effects.
According to Andaya, because of that, the online news company “turned a blind eye and deaf ear.” Keng’s camp stressed that this is the real issue. “They did not show basis for these accusations,” the lawyer added.
With this, Andaya said that Rappler forgot to uphold the truth which is one of its primary duties. She added that the power that the media entity wields, “they have forgotten their accountability”.
The lawyer reiterated that is the real case. “Where is the violation of press freedom there?” the camp of Wilfredo Keng asked.
