Taal Volcano Active, PHIVOLCS Documents 5 Earthquakes In 24 Hours

5 EARTHQUAKES FROM TAAL VOLCANO – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Tuesday recorded five earthquakes from Taal in the last 24 hours.

However, Phivolcs emphasized that the activity could mostly be attributed to “rock-fracturing processes beneath and around the edifice”.

Moreover, Phivolcs stated that vents on the main crater and along Kastila Trail spewed a 20-30 meter high steam. According to an article from Inquirer, the steam was sent southwest.

Still, Taal Volcano remained on alert level 1. This means that the volcano could suddenly create steam-driven or phreatic explosions and volcanic earthquakes. Along with this, nearby residents should also expect sudden minor ashfall, lethal accumulations, or expulsion of volcanic gas.

Furthermore, Philvocs stressed that the entry to the TVI, Taal’s permanent danger zone is still not allowed. Meanwhile, local government units are urged to continue monitoring barangays around Taal Lake.

Lastly, the LGUs should investigate damage to property around the area in order to strengthen preparedness and develop contingency plans and means of communication in case of an emergency or sudden increase in volcanic activity.
