WHO To Philippines: Quarantine Ineffective, No Decrease In Cases

WHO Says Philippines Shows No Rapid Decrease Despite Strict Lockdown

WHO TO PHILIPPINES – The World Health Organization (WHO) noted that despite having one of the strictest lockdowns, the number of coronavirus cases continued to increase.

In a previous article, we learned that the Philippines had the strictest quarantine protocols compared to other Asian countries. However, WHO highlighted that strict protocols aren’t always effective.

Following the Philippine’s two-month long lockdown, the number of cases were still on the rise. But, despite this fact, the government had re-opened the economy, transportation, and other industries.

Still, even with looser restrictions, Dr. Takeshi Nishijima, WHO Western Pacific technical officer emphasized the importance of staying at home. Furthermore, he warned of potentially higher numbers of new coronavirus cases.

Nishijima state that even with the strict implementation of protocols, the Philippines still showed no signs of rapidly decreasing the virus count.

Previously, the Department of Health recorded an average of 200 cases per day. However, this number has recently been surpassing 300 cases daily as the DOH recorded 350 cases of COVID-19 yesterday.

According to an article from Philstar, Nishijima stated:

In the Philippines, we are seeing the new number of cases, which is kind of stabilized a bit. We are hoping it will decrease in the future. I think we need to be prepared to continue what we are doing right now.

Meanwhile, despite the rising of cases, several government officials have declared that the country has flattened the curve. This may be used as context for when President Rodrigo Duterte decides to act on lowering restrictions of high risks areas.
