Bawal ang COVID-19 Jokes Ordinance is Now in Effect in Valenzuela City
Valenzuela City government already singed the Ordinance No. 708 series of 2020 o ang “Bawal Ang COVID-19 Jokes” amid pandemic.
A copy of the ordinance, signed by Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian, has been sent to the media since May 14. The ordinance will impose sanctions on anyone who spreads false and malicious information about coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
“Sa bisa ng ordinansang ito, ipinagbabawal ang paggamit ng COVID-19 sa katatawanan katulad ng pagpapanggap o pag-aakusa sa kaninuman ng pagiging positibo sa sakit na ito nang wala namang katotonhanan,” said on Facebook post of Valenzuela City government.
According to the post, the ordinance also covers the use of COVID-19 as a joke in conversations, personal maps, correspondence, telephone, email, social media, and everything else.
Residents who will be caught violating the ordinance will pay fine worth P5,000 or they will be sanction to community service such as helping relief goods preparations and distributions. They will be also jailed for almost a month if their violations are severe.
Minors or underage offenders must be subject to the City Social Welfare and Development Office’s Intervention Program. In the event that the minor does not comply with the Intervention Program, their parents will be held accountable under the Code of Parental responsibility.
