The Wow China program, which airs on Radio Philippines RP1 under the Philippine Broadcasting Service (PBS), is an affiliate agency of Presidential Communications Operations (PCOO). The program went viral on social media after it claimed that it was promoting Chinese culture in the country.

Netizens criticized the Chinese program for allegedly “pro-China propaganda” amid the COVID-19 pandemic. On its episode last Sunday was hosted by Nimfa Asuncion and Ernest Wang, they featured a discussion about the coronavirus as well as Mandarin lessons.

However, PBS released a statement about their program. According to the agency, the Chinese program has been airing since 2018 every weekend and China Radio International is said to be the producer.

It just has a PBS anchor co-hosted. And contrary to the news spread on social media, it is a program that shows the culture, traditions, and history of both countries.

According to the report of PTV, the airing of Wow China is just one of the many communications and media agreements of the Philippines and China to further strengthen and enhance the capabilities of the two countries in broadcast media.

PBS also stated that it is not just in China that they are in contact with certain programs. There are also news and features about some Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, and Brunei.

Here are some of netizen’s reactions on their live broadcast:
