Study Shows SHS Can Barely Write “Decent” English Sentences

SHS CAN BARELY WRITE ENGLISH – The SHS program was highly criticized upon its implementation in the Philippines.

Many say that the K-12 Program wasn’t that concrete yet to be pushed through. Furthermore, after a few years into the program, some still say that it was “too ambitious” and was designed for “advanced” learners.

Meanwhile, an article from the Philippine Institute of Development Studies (PIDS) claimed that K-12 students could barely write a “decent” sentence in English. This was more emphasized in subjects where students were required to make a research paper to pass.

As such, the report stated that students often submit projects to comply with requirements. This would be quite the opposite of their program’s goal. Thus, this prevents maximized learning they should receive from SHS education.

According to a report from ABS-CBN, SHS teachers also struggle in effectively delivering the curricula “due to insufficient guidelines, inadequate materials and preparations”.

However, PIDS consultant Karen Brillantes said the problems were merely “birthing pains”. Furthermore, she emphasized that these are usual in implementing new programs.

As such, she called on the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority to improve collaborations.

Additionally, the respective institutions should also iron out policies related to the SHS program.

President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III approved the Enhanced Basic Education Act. This expanded the 10 year education cycle (grade-school – high-school) with K-12 (Kindergarten and 12 Years of Basic Education).
