Examples Of Blended Words - Definitions And Examples

From time to time, the English language evolves. As such, new words are created, old words get a new meaning and much more. One of the reasons why this happens is because of convenience and popularity, much like in blended words.

Blended words are basically a combination of two words melded together to form a new one. Here are some examples:

Blended WordCombination
BlogWeb + Log
VlogVideo + Log
SmogSmoke + Fog
CyborgCybernetic + Organism
BrunchBreakfast + Lunch

With this, blended words are usually created in one of two ways.

  1. By adding the first part of the word to the second part of the word much like with Smog. (Smoke and Fog).
  2. Combining the beginning of two words like in Cyborg (Cybernetic + Organisms).

How about words that could exist individually if separated like in the case of “Toothbrush”? Are they also blended words?

The answer to that is No. Words like toothbrush and sunflower are called “compound words”. These are two different words fused together to create a new word.

However, unlike blended words, compound words take the entirety of the words and places them together. For example:

  1. Campfire
  2. Butterfly
  3. Dragonfly
  4. Toothpaste
  5. Sunflower
