Man with Down Syndrome Died on His Birthday Due to Coronavirus
NEW JERSEY – 30-year-old man with down syndrome dies on his birthday after getting infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
According to the report, Thomas Martin, 30, died 9-days after his mother Carolyn Martin-Reitz died at Clara Maas Medical Center because of the deadly coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Martins’ stepdad Rudy Reitz sadly reported the incident about his wife and beloved son. According to him, his wife considered his son as her world.
“Her entire life revolved around making sure that Thomas was healthy, loved, and stayed active,” Reitz said.
He said his son was rushed to the hospital on March 23 after his condition worsened. Reitz added that despite the illness, the son repeatedly asked what his plans for his upcoming birthday party would be.
Hours before his death, his 20 classmates from the Felician School for Exceptional Children in Lodi went to celebrate his birthday. Her school also provided birthday cake and pizza and even sang a “Happy birthday” song.
Later on, his son loose its breathe as the last word he heard is the “Happy Birthday” people sang for him, according to Reitz. Meanwhile, the whole community is deeply saddened by the loss of Carolyn and Thomas.
For decades, Martins-Reitz served as president of the local Rosary Society and was an active member of the St. Casimir’s Roman Catholic Church in Newark. He also worked as a graphic designer in the Archdiocese of Newark.
