WHAT IS ALPARES? – In this article, we are going to learn about the history and significance of a certain Spanish word – Alperes.
If you have read Jose Rizal’s works such as “Noli Me Tangere” you may have come across the word “Alperes” before. The word actually comes from the Spanish “Alferez” which means a junior officer in the Spanish army.
Meanwhile, in Rizal’s work, the “Alferez” is the leader of the civil guards. Furthermore, the character in Noli Me Tangere holds a high power. However, his relationship with his wife “Doña Consolacion” was in shambles.
This was mainly due to him being an abusive drunk towards his wife and his soldiers.
Likewise, the Alferez, during the Spanish occupation, was the head police of a certain town or city. Additionally, the Alferez also had powers similar to a second lieutenant and a higher power than a Seargent.
There are also other spelling variations of the word such as: “Alperez” and “Alpares”. This depended on your dialect and culture as the Philippines has several languages and dialects.
