WHAT IS CHAMPOY – The Philippines is home to a variety of sweets and delicacies imprinted in its culture.
Because of the heavy influence brought by Chinese, Spaniards, Japanese, and Westerners, the Philippines had incorporated diverse cultures and made it their own.
One of these was a popular Chinese sweet in the Philippines called “Cham-poy” or “Tsampoy”. This dessert is made from the Myrica rubra fruit called yangmei or Chinese Bayberry or Chinese Strawberry.
As it ripes, the fruit sports a bright red color. However, the preserved fruit sold as a sweet is dark brown to black in color. Additionally, each fruit contains a single seed in the center.
Meanwhile, there is also a popular comedy television show in the Philippines called Champoy in the 1980s. The show starred Subas Herrero, Tessie Tomas, and Noel Trinidad.
It aired on RPN-9 from 1980 to 1985. The show aired every Thursday from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM during its run. However, in 1985 the show was cancelled by RPN which was owned by President Ferdinand Marcos’s crony, Roberto Benedicto.
