ERIS – In this topic, we will now know one the five different known dwarf planets, the the first discovered dwarf planet Eris.
It is the first ever discovered dwarf planet in the Solar System, according to Space. It was discovered in 2005. It was named after the Greek goddess of discord and strife.
When it was discovered, astronomers thought it was larger than Pluto and even considered that it could possibly be the tenth planet of the system.
This, however, was the sole reason why they demoted Pluto to dwarf planet status a year after its discovery. This remains a controversy, hence, the reason for naming the dwarf planet this way.
Eris lies in the Kuiper Belt in the outer region of the solar system. It would take 561 for this dwarf planet to circle around the sun. It rotates every 25 Earth-hours.
The dwarf planet has a moon called Dysnomia. The dwarf planet’s surface might be made of ice rich in nirogen with frozen methane with a less than a milimeter thick layer. This is due to its atmosphere which condenses as frost on the surface as it moves away from the sun.
