Meaning
Also known as hard-surface cleaners, these refer to substances in the form of liquids, powders, sprays, or granules that are used to remove dirt, dust, stains, stench, and clutter on surfaces.
Their purposes include health, beauty, removing offensive odor, and avoiding the spread of dirt and contaminants to oneself and others.
There are four main types, according to Canadian Institude of Food Safety:
- Detergents
- The most common type. These are used in home and commercial kitchens. These work by breaking up dirt or soil, hence, making it easy to wash it away
- Degreasers
- Also known as solvent cleaners, these are used to remove grease from surfaces like oven tops, counters, and grill backsplashes.
- Abrasives
- Refers to substances or chemicals that solely depends on rubbing or scrubbing action in order to clean dirt from hard surfaces.
- Acids
- The most powerful type of cleaning agent. These are used with care. If not diluted correctly, they can be poisonous and corrosive. These are used to remove mineral deposits, descaling dishwashers or removing rust from restroom facilities.
